In botany, any of several trees of the genera Robinia and Gleditsia of the legume family, with primate compound leaves and many-seeded pods, of E US. The black locust R. pseudoacacia and the honeylocust G. triacanthos are examples. The name locust tree is also applied to the carob, a small European tree.
